GLOW - Santa Monica
I attended The First Annual GLOW art event in Santa Monica this past Saturday night. The concept was interesting, the execution left a lot to be desired. The first problem, traffic and parking. I drove around with my sister for almost two hours looking for parking. In an area that is already difficult to find parking on a weekend. It didn't seem like the event promoters expected the turn out to be as big as it was. Once we found parking, I was expecting the art installations to be much more intriguing. But many of the exhibits had lines that were so long, it was difficult to even see what was happening.
Of the installations I did see, Ex-SE-08 by Shih Chieh Huang, Primal Source by Usman Haque and Camera Projecta by Shive Mandell were interesting and definitely got my attention. I was surprised by how many people attended this event. I think 60% of the people there had no idea what the actual event was for. But since it was free and there were some KCRW DJ's spinning, the event attracted a very diverse crowd.
I hope they do make this an annual event, my only request is for better parking management and more art installations.
